The capital of the province of Pontevedra is a charming city very suitable to be discovered on foot, walking through its old town full of history, culture and leisure, with that special spell that only ancient places have. Built within a walled enclosure, surviving with patience the passage of centuries, this “boa vila” with its delightful streets, has one of the most beautiful and best preserved historic areas in Galicia. The enchantment of this small town can be read in the guild names that receive many of their squares: Square of firewood, Square of vegetables, Square of blacksmith…
Among the essential, we highlight the Basilica of Santa Maria la Mayor, and the churches of San Francisco, San Bartolomé or the Peregrina, but you should also keep some spare time to get lost through your walk, to relax in its parks and to have a tapa, coffee or a drink at any of its lively terraces.
On the way to the city, you shouldn´t miss the majestic Pazo de Lourizán, with a wonderful romantic garden, which houses exotic and native species, most notably the camellia.
